Saturday the 22nd of June 2013 was another moment or day of brilliance for the young Glen Norah Knights!

Giants who took part in this event were: Gifford (from Bulawayo), Churchill, Prince Edward and Allan Wilson schools.

Here is a summary of how GNKCA and the giants played in the 4 round event:

ROUND1

Glen Norah Knights 4 Cornway college 0

Churchill 3 Glen Norah 1 High 1

Gifford 3 Prince Edward 1

Round 2

Glen Norah Knights 2 Gifford 2

Prince Edward 4 Cornway College 0

Churchill 4 ST. Peters B 0

Churchill 2 Chikangwe A 2

Round 4

Gifford 3 Chikangwe A 1

Churchill 3 Prince Edward 1

Therefore GNKCA had Total Board Points of 12.5 followed by Gifford and Churchill with 12. GNKCA came clear first, and tied on 2nd place were Gifford and Churchill. A blitz play off was played to ascertain the 2nd and 3rd position. Gifford came out victorious by a 3-1 margin thus sealing the 2nd position.

The Glen Norah Knights maintained the team that went to Masvingo a week earlier on the 15th of June for the Gokomere chess festival. In Masvingo the knights were tied on 1st place with the hosting team.

Zhemba Jemusse (15) board 1, Vincent Mabodongwa (14) board 2, Kudzai Mhandu (11) board 3 and Collins Mabodongwa (10) on board 4. The very young and small boys still in primary on board 3 and 4 are fast becoming young masters with their sheer tactical brilliances in all the tournament games. They are a joy to watch considering they will be playing ‘Big man’ as very small as they are out classing their opponents and exhibiting maturity in all their games.

Zhemba Jemusse (15) collected all points and got best board 1 prize. Kudzai Mhandu (11) got best board 3 prize.

The Prince Edward team of: Gerald Matemavi, L.Tavagwisa, Alpha Chaendera, (Former GNKCA player) and T.Chapoloza found the going tough as they were hammered by Gifford (3-1) and Churchill (3-1) in the 1st and 4th rounds respectively.

The Bulawayo guys (Gifford) team was strong from board 1 to board 4 with: Archford Matiringe board 1, Victor Muchemwa board 2, Bhekile Ndlovu board 3 and Nyasha Ziwachi on board 4. Archford Matiringe won with black against FM Gerald Matemavi (PE) in the 1ST round who was under time pressure in their game.

Matiringe went on to meet ‘the guy made of steel ‘Zhemba Jemusse in the 2nd round in the high voltage Gifford vs. GNKCA match. Zhemba with black chose the King’s Indian defense which he had prepared well prior to the tournament. A swift strike type of a game ensued as they castled on different sides. Zhemba gained initiative by exchanging a Castle for a Knight. Matiringe‘s King was suddenly surrounded by an armada of 3 pawns, a Rook and a Knight and he was history soon. GNKCA’s first 2 boards won whilst last 2 boards got themselves into tricky end games. It was a truce 2-2.

GNKCA’s last round with giants Allan Wilson was a must win match if we were to go for glory in the form of gold. Thanks to the crucial points which came from Zhemba on board 1 and Kudzai board 3. 10 year old Collins on board 4’s well fought battle harvested a draw which was instrumental in lifting the 2013 Churchill festival shield with a 2,5-1,5 last round victory as Collins’s brother Vincent on board 2 was given an overdose of knight forks to lose his game. The young boy Collins saved the day with a theoretical draw of K+R vs. K+R! We catch or teach them young at GNKCA!
